Final 12 months we blogged about Urban Dictionary’s concentrate on content moderation.

We knew that sustaining the unique nature of Urban Dictionary would need big changes.

Here’s what we’ve changed, and that which we have actuallyn’t changed, thus far.

Definitions are no longer moderated by volunteers. Underneath the old system, a meaning had been posted whenever a majority of volunteer moderators decided it had been well worth publishing. We appreciate our volunteer moderators’ work through the years. In the long run, this technique had become dominated with a noisy minority whom published abusive definitions and didn’t publish the nutrients.

We updated our general public content instructions, and step-by-step content tips, to simplify what’s okay on Urban Dictionary. Generally speaking, a meaning that describes an offensive or violent term is ok, but a meaning that endorses or promotes an offensive or violent term just isn’t fine.

We redeveloped our moderation system. Our very own moderation group now product reviews all newly-submitted and flagged definitions, and rejects definitions that violate our content recommendations. If you notice a meaning that violates our content directions, please banner it, and our moderation group will review it quickly.

This task is ongoing therefore we welcome your feedback. And us know if you’d like to join the moderation team, let.

A person from nyc stated:

The whole world is filled with diverse ideas and languages. re Solving “hate” or “abuse” won’t be achieved by selectively deeming words that are slang be unsatisfactory for a dictionary that tries to maintain with colloquial language since it becomes popular.

A person from Missouri stated:

You give an ongoing solution that can help individuals recognize and inform by themselves […] although some terms get it on.com are unpleasant, they have to be defined to ensure individuals can arm by themselves with information and understanding. Kiddies ask moms and dads just exactly just what words that are bad. Pretending those expressed words don’t exist does not assist them or anybody. Informing them and educating on definitions DOES.

A person from Florida stated:

You don’t defeat evil by hiding it away, you reveal it to your light, because just then can individuals observe how bad it really is, and just then can their minds be changed about it.

We agree to you. We realize that the world that is real be unpleasant and is filled with unpleasant terms. Urban Dictionary is definitely a tool that is important know very well what those terms suggest. Once you understand a unpleasant word’s meaning can fight inequality and punishment. But there is a big change between making use of Urban Dictionary to report this is of an unpleasant term and using it to commemorate or endorse a unpleasant meaning.

We’re going to maybe maybe not ban particular words, and now we can’t re re re solve hate and abuse on earth (whom can, really?). But we shall simplify Urban Dictionary’s community recommendations and build better tools to enforce them. Our objective is always to assist users compose better definitions, and empower users to flag definitions which do not satisfy our community instructions. We hope this can enhance the all around health of Urban Dictionary.

Rethinking the Dictionary July 7, 2020

Two decades ago, I began Urban Dictionary being an accepted destination for all to fairly share their language. It had been designed to subvert the authority of this conventional dictionary and to report our messy, weird, and unpredictable language because it developed. Every single day, regular individuals add a huge number of definitions, which makes it a full time income document that is cultural. Since 1999, our community has written over 12 million definitions. I’m proud that Urban Dictionary is now a way to obtain laughter plus an irreplaceable guide made by and also for the individuals.

But, on the full years, online discourse has changed, and thus have actually the words we’re getting.

Like many online platforms we’ve been overwhelmed by hate speech and content that is abusive females, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, along with other vulnerable teams. Hate message and abusive content online could cause genuine damage offline. It may also cause people to feel unsafe to talk up and share their language, silencing whole sets of individuals. It is not everything we want our platform become for.
